John deBary is a cocktail and bar expert with over a decade of experience working in award-winning New York City bars and restaurants.

John got his start bartending in 2008 at the James Beard award-winning cocktail bar, PDT (Please Don’t Tell), and his original recipes appear in the best-selling cocktail book of the same name. His consulting clients include Emmi-Roth, BeMixed, Global Spirits USA, Club Street Social (Singapore), Raiola Co., and SKYY Vodka, as well as private clients.

As the bar director for Momofuku, where he worked from 2009 to 2018, John has trained dozens of bartenders and servers, opened ten restaurants, each with their own unique bar program and oversaw the ongoing operations of all bars in the group.

John was the deputy editor of the annual Food & Wine cocktail book from 2011 to 2015, and his work has appeared in Lucky Peach, Munchies, Bloomberg Pursuits, GQ, Liquor.com and the New York Times.

John is the author of a yet-untitled cocktail book, to be published by Clarkson Potter in Spring of 2020.

John is currently developing a line of nonalcoholic botanical aperitifs, expecting to launch in the second half of 2019.

John is also the co-founder and board president of the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of hospitality industry professionals through advocacy, grantmaking, and impact investing.

John lives with his husband and cat in the Lower East Side and in my spare time he enjoys yoga and weightlifting, Star Trek, cooking, and gardening.”
